Bren's Rideout

about 4hrs and about 200miles

Got the idea to do this ride off a friends face book page. It is a ride to Tan Hill a pub which claims to be the highest in Britain. Did the normal back road to Cockermouth where I picked up the A66 and stayed on it until just after the Stainmoor Cafe where I took a right towards Barras. Once on this road Tan Hill is clearly signposted. The views were brilliant and the sheep, as well as being suicidal were the most ugly sheep I've seen in my life. When I say suicidal I do mean exactly that as they tried to jump in front of you, not like Cumbrian sheep who can't be bothered to look up and would rather keep on eating the grass.

Bridge over old railway line

Cumbria looking good

I picked a good day as it wasn't too hot and the traffic on the roads was light. I got to Tan Hill, took a photo and turned around and took a left towards Keld. When you get through Keld you come to a T-junction, one way says Kirkby Stephen and the other say Reeth, take the Reeth road. When you get to Thwaite take a right turn, signposted Hawes, some great views on this road.

Tan Hill pub, I'll have a drink when I next call

Nice roads, but look out for the sheep

I went straight to Hawes but the intention was to visit a pub called the Green Dragon and you go into the pub to gain access to a waterfall. While travelling this road you pass a hotel called the Simonstone Hotel, take a right then a left to Hardraw and the pub is down there, unfortunately, I left my directions at home and couldn't remember to go to Hardraw so I didn't get to see the falls. Anyway, at Hawes I took a right and picked up the A684 which took me into Kendal and I took the coast road back to Egremont. Lovely day out but didnt stop for a bite to eat as England were playing and had to get back home. Good ride out and England won, not a bad day. Thanks to Leeroy for the directions and thanks to Bren for drawing my attention to the route.

I had fun on this road
